In 1923, both Ilya Ilf and Evgeny Petrov began working individually in Moscow newspapers and humorous magazines. In the fall of 1927 they joined forces and worked together in their unique “piano four-hands” for almost ten years, while still continuing to write individually. Thus the “double writer” had the good luck of living two lives, one jointly and two separately. However, not many people know about yet another life of Ilya Ilf: his photographic life. In the winter of 1929-30 the Odessa-born Ilya Ilf—a Muscovite as of 1923—was bit by the photography bug. How did this come about?
