Ilf and Petrov
I was thrilled to be asked to translate Ilf and Petrov again! Bauer Verlag, who has one of the most unusual websites I’ve seen, asked me to translate “Blue Devil,” the opening story from IP’s 1928-1929 Kolokolamsk cycle, for their artist’s book Interview at Praça Rosefield by Iulia Nistor and Leslie Bauer (Bauer Verlag: Frankfurt, 2019, pp. 159-163).
Doctor Grom came back to Kolokolamsk from Moscow, where he’d gone on business, in September. He had a slight limp and, in an unusually excessive move, took a horse-cab home. The doctor usually walked home from the station. Citizen Grom, his wife, was extraordinarily surprised at this turn of events…
